What is a Link Motion Press?
A Link Motion Press is an advanced version of a traditional crank press. It has a special linkage system that optimizes the speed of the ram (the moving part that presses the material). This system improves precision and efficiency.
In a normal crank press, the motion is created by a crank and connecting rod. In a link drive press, an extra linkage is added to slow down the ram at the top and bottom of the stroke, and speed it up in the middle.
How It Works:
The movement in a link drive press works as follows:
- Electric Motor → Flywheel
The flywheel spins continuously and stores energy. - Flywheel → Clutch → Crankshaft
The clutch connects the flywheel to the crankshaft and transfers energy. - Crankshaft → Link Mechanism → Ram
The crankshaft is not directly connected to the ram. A link mechanism in between adjusts the speed:- Slows down the ram at the top and bottom of the stroke.
- Speeds it up in the middle.
- Keeps the ram longer at the bottom (BDC) to improve forming.
This provides:
- Smoother forming of material,
- Less force on the die,
- Better control over material flow and shape.
Technical Features and Benefits
Optimized Speed Profile: Unlike standard presses, the speed during the stroke is not constant. For example, in a 200 mm stroke;
- First 50 mm = acceleration
- Middle 100 mm = high speed
- Last 50 mm = deceleration
Longer Dwell at Bottom: The ram stays 20–30 milliseconds longer at the bottom, which is useful in deep drawing and precise forming.
Longer Die Life: Lower shock and impact extend die life by 2–3 times.
